Neo-Breathe

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused global social panic and economic disruption. People need to find an appropriate way to protect themselves from the virus invasion, and take the initiative to fight the virus.

​In the future sci-fi scenario, I conceived a wearable device carried by the human body. When the virus is detected, people could activate button and knob to release the disinfection solution. In this way, every individual can resist the virus.

Problem

A theory called AGONISM states that in order to make a social change and free people, the conflict must be allowed where differences and opposition can be confronted. Therefore, I conceived an evolution of a new society on the border area with a new social structure.

Concept

I conceived an interactive respirator that can help people detect the virus and purify it. This device contains three main parts: a mask as protect layer, a breathing tube to supply pure air, and a mechanic lung to detect virus.​When people put on this device, only pure oxygen can be inhaled. When the device detects virus around, the lamp ring will turn red, and people can release disinfectant to kill the virus. In this way, every individual can act as a weapon to fight against the virus, instead of being in a passive defensive position.

3D Modeling

The device is integrated by several functional components and tubes. The mechanical lung is the core part which connects with the mask to deliver oxygen and gets disinfectant from the purifier. Buttons, knobs are assembled on the lung to control purification type and rate.

Interactive Logic

I drew a diagram to explain the interactive logic of the device.​At first, air is inhaled through inhalation valve to the detection zone. If the air is clean, the lamp ring displays blue color and air is delivered to the mask.​On the other hand, if the air contains virus, the lamp ring displays red color. In this situation, human can press the button and adjust the knob to release a kind of disinfectant, and the air is detected again. This circulation will continue until the air is completely purified and the light turns blue.

Future Scenario

In the future, respirators will become a necessity in people's daily life. People will build a new relationship with machines, using them to breathe and operating to breathe pure oxygen. There will be supply stations on the street so that everyone is involved in the fight against the virus.

Physical Model

I made a physical model to bring the respirator into life. The manufacturing process includes: 3D printing, soldering, connecting circuit, programming based on Arduino, and painting.
